Velvet Portraits-First Impressions

Terrace Martin played a huge role in the making of To Pimp a Butterfly: the piece is dripping with his saxophone playing and production work.  The man is a magnificent manipulator of sound and this talent is on full display on his new album “Velvet Portraits.” The album makes for an interesting, diverse compilation of different soul/funk/jazz sounds with different levels of success. The album rambles a bit and some of the songwriting isn’t very strong so, I’m not too sure if it’s front to back value is very high, but I will be returning to some of the more meaty sound-bites.
